"Divine Symmetry“ hält 48 bisher unveröffentlichte Tracks/Demos aus dieser Zeit bereit, dazu kommen neue alternative Mixe von „Hunky Dory“-Tracks des ursprünglichen Co-Produzenten Ken Scott. Zwei Bücher begleiten das Boxset, ein 100-seitiges gebundenes Buch mit exklusiven Erinnerungsstücken und Fotos sowie ein 60-seitiger Nachdruck von Bowies Notizbüchern aus dieser Zeit, die handgeschriebene Lyrics, Kostümskizzen, Aufnahmenotizen und Setlisten enthalten.
Die Linernotes für die Veröffentlichung wurden von Bowie-Experte Tris Penna verfasst, dazu kommen Beiträge von „Hunky Dory“-Co-Produzent Ken Scott, den lebenslangen Bowie-Freunden Geoff MacCormack und George Underwood, Sängerin Dana Gillespie, Gitarrist Mark Pritchett, Promoter David Stopps vom Musikclub Friars Aylesbury, Verleger Bob Grace und Fotografin Louanne Richards.
1971 war ein Schlüsseljahr Jahr für Bowie. Er unterschrieb einen Plattenvertrag bei RCA, er lernte in New York Andy Warhol, Lou Reed und Iggy Pop kennen, er wurde erstmals Vater (und schrieb als Ausdruck seines väterlichen Stolzes den Song „Kooks“), und im Juni des Jahres stand er erstmals mit Mick Ronson, Woody Woodmansey und Trevor Bolder auf der Bühne, jener Band, die später Spiders From Mars getauft wurde und mit Bowie das Klassikeralbum „Hunky Dory“ aufnahm.
„KOOKS“ in einer Version, die Bowie und Gitarrist Mick Ronson für die von Bob Harris moderierte BBC-Sendung „Sounds Of The 70s“ einspielten, ist schon jetzt als Download/Stream erhältlich und kann unten angehört werden. Die Aufnahme fand am 21. September 1971 für BBC Radio im Studio T1 in Kensington House, Shepherds Bush, London statt, die Ausstrahlung erfolgte am 4. Oktober 1971.
